About the fund
On June 24th, 2022, the United States Supreme Court’s ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization overturned Roe v. Wade, upending the constitutional right to abortion after decades of protection. South Asian communities and organizations are disproportionately impacted by this decision due to multiple and compounding factors from systemic marginalization to stigma and shame towards abortion.
SOAR ‘s Reproductive Health & Justice Fund supports individuals and organizations in addressing the growing and urgent needs of South Asian communities.
Linguistically-accessible and culturally-tailored resources and training for South Asian survivors of gender-based violence and community members
Culturally-tailored resources and training for staff and organizations to provide education about sexual & reproductive health & wellness
Outreach to survivors and community members about reproductive health, sexual health, and reproductive rights
These resources will be distributed across SOAR’s 32 member organizations who serve South Asian communities across the US, as well as other AAPI and reproductive health and justice organizations.
Abortion Care Guide
This month, SOAR launched the Abortion Care Guide (ACG) because South Asians deserve to have knowledge and information that is relatable and celebratory of their bodies and cultures. Our hope is that this resource can both fill critical gaps in access and inspire dialogue about abortions within our diaspora.
The ACG provides medically-factual information on abortion logistics, methods, and aftercare, and it’s been translated into 20 South Asian languages. This guide is the first in the upcoming collection of sexual & reproductive health & wellness (SRHW) resources, and we need your support to create the next guide.
The Abortion Care Guide will be available in all 20 South Asian languages on May 16th, 2023.
Why is this important?
The South Asian diaspora is incredibly linguistically diverse: hundreds of languages are spoken across South Asian ethnic subgroups. In a recent poll of SOAR’s member organizations, community-based organizations offer services in over 20 South Asian languages. The ability to access care in one’s language at best “enhances trust between patients and physicians, optimizes health outcomes, and advances health equity for diverse populations;” at worst, it “diminish[es] patients’ sense of integrity and intensifi[es] their vulnerability in the clinical setting” leading to poor health outcomes.
