About South Asian SOAR
South Asian SOAR (Survivors, Organizations, and Allies — Rising) is a collective of survivors, 30+ organizations, and allies advancing the national movement to end gender-based violence in the South Asian diaspora. SOAR was founded in 2020 to build collective power to drive long-lasting systems change. We do this by growing survivor leadership, shifting narratives through research and advocacy, and strengthening the field through capacity building.
About South Asians for Abortion
Since the fall of Roe, the speed and scale of the crises confronting South Asian communities cannot be overstated. SOAR created South Asians for Abortion, a digital platform to mobilize South Asians for abortion, reproductive justice, and bodily autonomy in a post-Roe America. The digital platform seeks to be a home for this movement — it is a place to read and share abortion stories, access and contribute to resource mobilization, and engage with advocacy that centers the voices and needs of South Asians.
Acknowledging the Legacy of Reproductive Justice
We recognize that our advocacy of reproductive justice stands on the shoulders of Black activists who curated language and carved out space for marginalized people of color to voice and fight for their reproductive needs. To that end, we pay homage to the Women of African Descent for Reproductive Justice, a group of Black women based in Chicago, who coined “reproductive justice” in 1994.
While focused on the needs of South Asian survivors and communities, SOAR’s advancement of reproductive justice is fundamentally rooted in the reproductive freedom and healing of all marginalized groups, including but not limited to: Black, Latine, Indigenous, and AANHPI people.
